Floods and Fires in East Meon


Floods were a frequent event in East Meon and in 1953, it suffered its worst flood for forty years. A relief culvert was built in the 1960s, and the river was widened and straightened.


Fires have been a frequent occurrence in East Meon, and have removed many old buildings, especially thatched cottages. These photographs are of a huge fire in 1910, which wiped out several cottages, and of 2009, when the thatch of Brook cottage caught fire and was treated as a major fire incident.
